At the milestone age of 60, I don’t know that I would call myself old, but I certainly qualify as “aging!” (Our kids like to poke fun at how “old” Dave and I are, but they’ve been doing that for well over a decade at this pointโkids!)
Overall, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how, well, pleasant the experience of getting older has been. Certainly more positive than I thought it would be when I was younger! Iโm more self-assured and adaptable than I used to be, and I like to think Iโm at least a little bit wiser too! :-)
But aging isn’t all sunshine and daisies, and one aspect of aging that I’ve struggled with is how much my skin has changed. My skin isn’t nearly as firm as it used to be, and nowhere is that more obvious than my neck. I’ve had periods where I’ve felt so self-conscious about it that I wondered whether a serious procedure would be worth looking into.
But once I took a step back and looked at the bigger picture, I realized that Iโm likely not alone in feeling self-conscious about this particular issue. I ultimately decided my energy would be better spent researching tips that can help, and I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned with you today!
These simple tips and tricks will help you keep your neck muscles strong and your skin firm and wrinkle-free. :-)
7 Easy Remedies And Tips For Saggy Neck Skin

1. Improve Your Posture
Bad posture can be a big contributor to wrinkled and saggy neck skin. When youโre sitting, make sure to sit with your back straight to keep your neck nice and elongated.
If you find it difficult to keep good posture, try a posture corrector. You can find simple harness-style posture correctors online that pull your shoulders back into a better posture. Another option is a device like this one that you attach to your back, which buzzes to let you know when you should be sitting up straighter.
You can also improve your sleeping posture to help keep your neck skin firm. Sleep with your neck long and and stretched out, preferably on your back.
2. Avoid Excess Sun Exposure
Exposure to harsh sunlight can play a major role in saggy neck skin. Limiting your exposure to sunlight will help reduce wrinkles not only on your neck, but all over your body. You can still be out in the sun, but just be sure to sit in a shady spot if youโre staying out for a while.
3. Use Sunscreen
This one goes hand-in-hand with the tip above. Sun exposure is sure to aggravate wrinkles and saggy neck, so itโs a good idea to apply sunscreen anytime youโre going outside.
While applying a standalone mineral sunscreen will give you the most effective protection against damaging UV rays, any amount of sun protection is better than none at all! If you tend to be forgetful about applying sunscreen, incorporating a moisturizer with SPF into your morning beauty routine can help ensure your skin is at least somewhat protected.
4. Exercise Regularly
Regular exercise can help you reduce wrinkles and sags not only on your neck, but all over your body too! Excess fat stores can often make sagging and wrinkling worse, so exercise is key for keeping excess fat in check.

5. Exercise Your Neck
Do these simple neck exercise regularly to help keep your neck muscles tight and reduce sagging! Start by tilting your head back until your chin is pointing up at the ceiling. Jut your chin out so your lower lip goes over your upper lip, until you feel a stretch under your chin.
Hold this position for a few seconds, then return your lip and jaw to their normal position. Repeat this set of chin movements 20 times for a full set.
Another helpful neck exercise you can do is draw circles with your tongue while your mouth is closed. Do 5 circles moving clockwise, then 5 circles moving counterclockwise. Repeat this series 20 times for a full set.
Finally, hereโs an easy exercise you can do anywhere! With your mouth closed, press the tip of your tongue against the top of your mouth. Hold this position for 5 seconds, then release. Repeat 20 times for a full set.
6. Use A Wrinkle Reducing Serum
Serums with retinoids and antioxidants boost cell turnover, which can help improve the appearance of wrinkles. Using such a serum at night gives it ample time to renew your skin and minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
I use my Wrinkle Reducing Night Serum regularly because it’s effective without irritating my sensitive skin. If you’re looking for a complete system for caring for skin on your face and neck, check out the complete Timeless by Jillee system. The 6 products address the most common age-related skin concerns, and I love the way it makes my skin look and feel.

7. Strike A Pose
We all want to look our best in photos, but saggy neck skin can make that difficult! Try this simple trick from facial exercise trainer Cynthia Rowland to eliminate the double-chin effect. Just point your chin down, then stick your neck out like a turtle. It feels a bit strange, but this pose ends up being very flattering in photos!
You can also use makeup contouring to reduce the double-chin effect. Adding a dark contour under your jawline can make your jawline look stronger and more defined in person and in photos. Just apply a brown eyeshadow or bronzer that’s about three shades deeper than your foundation just below your jawline, then blend it in with a small brush.
Do you have a favorite tip or product for aging skin?

Professionally speaking from a 45 year career in skin care and makeup, I have watched and learned how I have aged, from my 20’s now into my 70’s, and how good skin care has made an impact along the way. I can tell you that the majority of visual effects of aging (wrinkles, skin texture, etc.) comes from environmental exposures, social habits, and lack of a consistent and good skin care routines rather than genetics and the hormonal changes women experience.
The sun is the biggest culprit here and does more damage than the average woman realizes. Smoking significantly strains the body’s integumentary system (skin, hair, nails, glands, nerves, etc.) to optimize vital nutrients. I could go on and on here about a few other things people do that are harmful and speed up cellular and photo aging. But the fact that we grow old is a life process and how we embrace, it as others here have pointed out. There is no avoiding it, but there is power in knowledge that can certainly help make the journey a little “smoother”.
The saggy neck syndrome we all face in one way or another is caused by the large platysma muscle that loses intra muscular engagement and suppleness with age; and disappearing hormones that keep the elastin and collagen fiber support structure under it smooth. No amount of neck exercising or posture correcting will solve this degradation issue, but you can improve neck skin texture and appearance by being religious about using sun block, keeping your weight in check, and being faithful to a high performance skin care regimen.
I also work with celebrity clients, and along with some of my pro makeup contouring techniques I also use skin lifts, which are temporary tapes used to gently pull on areas of the face to smooth out an area of the skin, especially the neck. Jillee’s comment about adjusting for a camera angle is great, and there are several other angles that work well too, such as elevating the camera slightly upward above the chin and then turning your chin slightly to the right or left. This engages both the sternocleidomastoid and platysma muscles for a smoother look in camera. Hope this helps!

I told mom – you and dad are in the cute older people category now. My mom will turn 80 in the fall. I love reading all these tips. My beauty blogger I follow says you can using a Bronzing Powder on your neck and chin area. Because the skin tone on your neck and chin is usually lighter than the skin on your face. And your skin also looses color as we age.

Please log in or create a free account to comment. When reading about the neck, it brought to my mind the post that I recently read of Jillee’s. It was about ways to make yourself look better on video calls. And if THAT isn’t a great way to look at yourself and see what needs fixing, I don’t know what will!! :>) Great ideas and fixes.
Please log in or create a free account to comment. This was a great post, Jillee. One thing…that one exercise that you said about jutting your chin towards the ceiling? I just read a thing saying that as you do that, push your tongue on the roof of your mouth at the same time. You can really feel it working the big muscle across your throat!

We always tell her yes mom you look younger. Thatโs part of my job to keep you looking good. As far as lotions I love Olays Age Defying lotion. I use the Broad spectrum formula. Itโs great. I just use a small amount. Itโs actually a great buy . I could spend a ton but Iโve always liked how you can get a good product without spending too much money.
Please log in or create a free account to comment. My mom turned 78 in October. Not long ago, she was talking about a woman that was 80 and referred to her as an “old woman.” I told my mom “you realize your not far from 80, right?” She just stuck her tongue out at me.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.lol My mother-in-love does that all the time! She says something about a certain man and church and says, “That little old man…” We remind her that they’re the same age & she just huffs.

Especially if they’re teens gettingto the point of washing their faces morning and night. I realize genes play a part in aging, but so does how we care for our skin. My Mom taught me early the importance of cleaning and moisturizing my skin. She always has and doesn’t look nearly 80. I’m 50 this year and my husband is 8 years older. He jokes that he looks like he robbed the cradle. We met one of his students when we were out one day. I heard him behind me tell his student to let him introduce them to his wife. When I turned around the student looked at me funny and I wondered why. After the next class my husband came home to tell me that the student was telling the class that his wife was way younger than him. He told them he was older than me, but I was older than I looked. lol My doctor that I’ve seen my whole adult life tells me every year I don’t look my age. Feels great, and I have aged, but I’ve also taken care of my skin.

Such great advice – being happy with who you are is invaluable!

Strangely, when I was younger, I was always using this and that to look better, but I guess I didn’t have time to really stress over it due to being busy with kids, husband, life, etc. NOW…at 65, when nothin’ stays where it should…no hair where there used to be and hair where I don’t want it…my looks have become like a challenge…or a dare, a mission! So, God please forgive me for growing more vain the older I get. And now, ladies…I need to go try to make eyebrows and pluck that long hair growin’ out of my NECK!!! Love to you all and my God bless you. :>)

Don’t remember taking time for me as I have grandkids and 99-year-old Mom to care for. It’s so hard to remember all these things to do! Be glad you can see well enough to detect even bad things. We take so much for granted.
Thanks for these great tips and tricks. And don’t forget to smile. We’ll all get wrinkles if we’re lucky enough to live that long. Somehow, smile wrinkles are so much more attractive than frownies.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.Just one other thing to do while applying moisturizer is always smooth your skin upwards, both on the neck and the face. It helps keep gravity from pulling your skin down and making more wrinkles. I learned this when I was just 18 at a cosmetics home party and never forgot it. Mary Kay lived with beautiful skin all her adult life. I have the obligatory crows feet and some frown lines above my nose, but have a lot less wrinkles than most people my age of 66. And by the way, I’ve followed you for the past few years and think you’re a very beautiful person, inside and out!

Please log in or create a free account to comment.Aging is not for sissies, but yes the alternative is not so great either. I am grateful for the stripes I have earned. However, I do a few things to slow the inevitable. Sun screen is essential. I use a knockoff brand
of moisturizer with a sunscreen in it religiously. But most importantly, I wash my face and dรฉcolletag, pat dry and then apply to face, neck, chest, shoulders and ears before they lose moisture. Lips are critical as well. Never ever lick your lips! In the morning and when they feel dry, apply a little water and immediately apply a dab of regular moisturizer followed immediately by a waxy lip gloss to seal in the moisture.
We do 80% of our life’s sun damage by the time we are 18; but it is never to late to start applying moisture and sunscreen to minimize and slow the damage. At 69, I still get women in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s asking me how I do it when they discover my age. I got the clues from a dermatologist many years ago and then passed the concept along to my burn surgeon after I was in an explosion. It worked so well that it is now part of the recovery protocol for burn survivors.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.Just remember this, everyone: don’t let anyone tell you that you NEED to fix something as natural as the signs of aging. If you want to do that, fine, it’s your life, your decision. Don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad about growing older!
I feel I’ve earned every wrinkle, every so-called problem area. I’ve got better things to worry about than how others perceive my looks!
Great advice!

Please log in or create a free account to comment. If you like to use self tanners, avoid your neck. The tanning product will gather in creases and make them more noticeable. Go ahead and put self tanner below your neck on your collarbone and dรฉcolletage. Less is more. Also, try a light diffusing BB cream on your neck. Then letโs all agree to stop looking there so much. Lol

Please log in or create a free account to comment.Iโll have to show this post to my mom. Itโs a little too late for an amazing lady in her mid-70s. All this skincare guidelines and the importance of this , didnโt come out until, I was in my early 30s.. She tries to wear high necklines or necklaces to detract attention from this area. This also one of her biggest complaints about aging.
